Discovering the Beauty of Montana

It has been a few months now since my visit to Montana and I have to admit my heart has yet to recover from the experience. There’s something that draws you to it that makes you want to return. In many cases, it has led to people moving there permanently.

From Missoula to the Glacier Mountains, the moments for pause and reflection seem endless. For those looking to disconnect for a bit and experience the serenity of slow travel, Montana is the place for you. Here are a few good reasons to unplug and get to know Montana.

Culture

On the surface, and I say this both as a New Yorker and a woman of colour, Montana doesn’t seem very diverse. Compared to larger cities, it isn’t, but it doesn’t lack richness in people or culture. There are unique stories, a vast history and a beautiful people that not only require our attention but deserve it. There is no better place to begin to understand the history of Montana than through the Indian Nations that live there. If you are fortunate enough to experience a Pow Wow, or take a tour, or even get the opportunity to speak to a member of one of Montana’s Indian Nations, embrace it. For me, these moments deepened my affection for the place and also allowed me to see Montana in ways I wasn’t able to before.

Cowgirl Magic

Put down your phone and venture into a ranch for an opportunity to come close to the beautiful horses of Montana. It’s also an chance to meet a few cowboys. Yet, I have to say, nothing is more awe-inspiring to me than watching the cowgirls in action. No offense to the guys, but I want to learn all the skills from these strong, talented, and truly kick-ass ladies.

Sunsets

Whether in the mountains, valleys, or plains, be sure to set time aside to stop and watch the sunset. With a group of friends by the fire is best, but even if going solo, you won’t be disappointed.

Glacier National Park

Referred to as the “Crown of The Continent,” the beauty and landscape of Glacier National Park is one that I am almost at a loss for words to describe, especially in a few short words. I will say that those few pockets of Wi-Fi-free zones found throughout the park are a blessing as it completely takes away any and all distraction from the incredible gift Mother Nature has laid before you. Of all the things worthy of unplugging for, this is it. Of all the reasons to fall in love with Montana, this is one of them.

Unexpected encounters

Of course, put all your gadgets away and pay attention when hiking or exploring through the wilderness of Montana especially. Safety first as you just never know what you may encounter along the way-bears are just one possibility.

But sometimes the encounters are not as threatening and though it is always best to keep your distance, coming upon the wildlife found throughout is always a fun moment you won’t want to be too distracted to miss.

A few people that helped me disconnect and embrace my unplugged experience in Montana were the tour guides at Glacier Guides who got me out in nature and my adrenaline pumping!

My stay at Flathead Lake Lodge awoke the cowgirl in me, and my stay in Lake McDonald Lodge right inside the park was a great way to unwind and relax.
