The beautiful Isle of Wight, found off the south coast of England in the English Channel, is full of amazing things to do. If you’re looking for a spot that’s not too far from home but still offers plenty of interesting things to do and see, consider a holiday to the Isle of Wight. It’s also small enough that you can easily see a lot of it without venturing too far from your Isle of Wight hotel.
Here’s five reasons why you should take a holiday to the Isle of Wight!
You’d expect an island to have beautiful beaches, and you’d certainly be correct when it comes to the Isle of Wight. Known for its mild climate, the island has been home to many beach resorts since the Victorian times. The most notable are perhaps Sandown, Shanklin, and Ventnor, all of which have many restaurants, cafés, and facilities that guarantee a good day at the beach. Appley and Ryde are best for activity-minded travellers, as they have the largest stretches of sand to enjoy. Either way, you’ll fall in love with the beaches of the Isle of Wight.
The walking trails
One of the best ways of seeing the Isle of Wight is to take to its walking trails; there are over 500 miles of walking trails, in fact. Those who want to can take a guided walking tour (there are even fossil tours) but it’s also easy to set out on your own. For those who like a view of the sea as they hike, there are plenty of coastal walks (both Brook and Compton Bay beaches offer access to coastal baths). Just make sure you’re prepared – some of the trails can be a bit uneven – so bring your hiking boots!
The water sports
If you want a unique way of seeing the Isle of Wight, try taking to the water! Cowes is a hub for sailing activities, and holds many racing regattas throughout the year (including the renown Cowes Week). For those craving a slower pace, there are many rowing clubs around the island, including at Shanklin, Ryde, and Newport. The most adventurous can take part in the tradition of rowing around the entire island!
History buffs will love all of the museums and tours on the island; with a fascinating history going back millions (!) of years, you’re sure to find a museum to suit what you’re into. Those wanting to learn about the dinosaur fossils on the island should head to Dinosaur Isle, while sailors will love The Classic Boat Museum. With a variety to see and learn, the museums on the island are also perfect for those travelling with kids. The island has also been home to many creative people over the years, so who knows – you might start feeling inspired!
THe overwhelming Beauty
Perhaps the best reason to take a holiday to the Isle of Wight is because it really is stunningly beautiful. From the chalk cliffs to the lush countryside, you might find yourself running out of room on your camera quite quickly. The Isle of Wight really does have it all: historic buildings, picturesque towns, rolling hills, and, of course, all those gorgeous beaches to explore. Which will be your favourite?
