“The capital of Portugal is full of rich history and tradition. Home to Vasco da Gama and numerous other explorers, it played a significant role in the age of exploration and this history can be observed in many attractions in the city. These pieces of history make Lisbon a truly beautiful city to immerse yourself in today. Lisbon’s appeal is its vibrant personality and warm people. There are beautiful views, bars and restaurants around every corner and a person happy to point them out.

There is no shortage of delicious food in Lisbon. Bacalhau (cod fish) is a local speciality, Bolinhos or pastéis de bacalhau (cod cakes) are unmissable and just about every restaurant will serve their version. Pastéis de Belém near Jerónimos Monastery has fantastic pastéis de nata served warm from the oven and dusted with cinnamon and powdered sugar, they are the best in the city. Casa da India is a busy restaurant you would likely pass on the street without the recommendation of a local.

The menus are in Portuguese and the servers do not speak English, so you know the food is authentic and it makes ordering more interesting! After dinner why not try a traditional local drink? Ginjinah is a brandy made from cherries that some restaurants serve in a chocolate cup that just makes the experience that much sweeter…

Whether it’s people, food, culture or history that motivates you to explore new destinations, Lisbon offers them all and is a truly incredible place to see.

Many of Lisbon’s attractions are within walking distance of the city centre. However, if you prefer there are many other affordable options for travel including: taxis, metros and cable cars. Local drivers that are knowledgeable and passionate about their city can be a fantastic source of information about must see areas and local traditions. Their often excellent recommendations are a fantastic bonus while you explore Lisbon.”
