We travel for a variety of reasons: to relax, to sightsee, to try something new. And sometimes – especially around Valentine’s Day – we travel for a bit of romance.

But what are the most romantic cities in the world? We at Expedia love to listen to what our customers have to say, and with millions of guest reviews submitted every year, we’ve put together a list of the most romantic cities in the world according to the reviews left by our UK customers. Have you been to any of the cities that make the cut?

Paris: Is it any surprise that UK customers described Paris as “romantic” more than any other city in the world? There’s no denying Paris’ title as the City of Love. Whether you’re strolling down the Seine, watching the Eiffel Tower light up against a night sky, or cosying up in a little bistro, Paris definitely deserves a spot on this list.

London: While Paris nabs the top spot, UK customers choose one of our own cities for the second most romantic city in the world! But anyone who’s been to London knows that’s not much of a surprise – the city is bursting with romantic activities, boutique hotels, and fabulous restaurants in which to spend the evening. And you can’t get much more romantic than walking down the Southbank arm in arm.

Venice: Is there anything more romantic than taking a traditional gondola ride through the beautiful canals of Venice? UK customers agreed that this Italian city is one of the most romantic in the world, and it’s not difficult to see why. Between the winding streets, the gondolier’s song, and the plates of pasta, it’s easy to fall in love in Venice.

Rome: And because Italy is known for being a top destination for romantic getaways and honeymoons, it’s natural that Rome takes the fourth spot on this list! A fantastic city to explore by day, at night this city turns into a lovers’ paradise, with cobblestoned streets, bustling squares, and cosy trattorias. It’s no wonder the Spanish Steps are filled with couples every evening.

Bruges: This Belgian city was another top pick for Expedia’s UK customers. A gorgeous medieval town, it looks like something plucked from a fairy tale, making it the perfect place to cement your love. If you’re looking for a romantic holiday, look no further than Bruges.

Amsterdam: While this Dutch capital is known for its great museums and its fantastic party culture, UK customers also noted its romantic atmosphere. Edinburgh: Expedia’s UK customers picked another local city, this time in Scotland! Edinburgh may be known for its Fringe Festival and its haggis, but there’s much more to this city than meets the eye, especially if you’re in the romantic mood. From long walks through the Old Town to a picnic in Princes Street Gardens, there are plenty of ways to evoke romance in Edinburgh.

Marrakech: This Northern African city is growing in popularity, and it’s clear to see why; the city is bursting with energy. Couples looking for a bit of romance will find it in the winding souks of Marrakech, where it’s easy to lose yourself in the sights, sounds, and smells of Moroccan culture. For a romantic evening you’re not soon to forget, dine on a traditional tagine while looking out over the Jemaa el-Fnaa.

Santorini: Is it any wonder that a Greek island made this list? Expedia’s UK customers ranked Santorini as one of the most romantic places in the world. Whether it’s the whitewashed villages, the delicious Greek food, the views out over the Mediterranean, or a combination of all three, there’s no denying many people head to Santorini for a bit of romance.

Prague: Finally, UK customers thought Prague deserved a spot on this list, with many reviews of the Czech capital citing it as a perfect spot for a romantic holiday. Whether your ideal romantic encounter involves a beer garden or a sunset stroll along Charles Bridge, Prague is sure to wow you.

So there you have it – the top ten romantic cities in the world, according to the reviews left by Expedia’s UK customers.

And when we looked at the data from our other markets, we found some similarities and some differences. Most customers from around Europe agreed that Paris deserved a top spot, although Expedia’s French customers also valued the romanticism of Florence, Barcelona, and Lyon. Italian customers thought that Verona, the city of Romeo and Juliet, deserved a mention, and they thought Lisbon and Vienna were worth a romantic getaway, too. German customers agreed that Venice is one of the most romantic cities in the world, but, like our Italian customers, they thought Lisbon should make the list, as well as Stockholm.

Meanwhile, in the Netherlands, our Dutch customers ranked many of their local cities as some of their romantic picks, including Maastricht, Rotterdam, and the nearby Belgian city of Ghent. Swedish customers thought locally as well, as they listed Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmo as some of their top romantic destinations. Norwegian customers added Oslo, Danish customers picked Copenhagen and Aarhus, and our Spanish customers chose Madrid and Seville to round out their lists.

So while there are some cities that seem to invoke a lot of romance – Paris and Venice, for example – perhaps what our data can tell us is that romance is found everywhere. Perhaps it’s not where you go, but who you go with.
